Infiniti's Supercar Delayed Until At Least 2017

Will it replace the mighty GT-R? Probably not, but the upcoming Infiniti halo supercar will certainly be quite something. Infiniti has made clear its plans to build a halo supercar, but yet the question remained as to when it’ll be ready for launch. Last May we were informed that Infiniti was planning to launch its hybrid supercar by 2016, but now it seems that date has been pushed back by a couple of years.

What’s the reason for the delay? Infiniti is still deciding whether it’ll have a front or mid-engined layout. Also still up for debate is its powertrain, but the decision here will likely proceed with a V6 engine mated to a hybrid system.

Infiniti launched two concepts in the past that strongly hinted at its supercar plans, the Essence and Emerg-e. The latter was equipped with a mid-engined 1.2-liter four and two electric motors for a total of 402 horsepower. The front-engined Essence had a 3.7-liter V6 hooked up to a single electric motor for an output of 592 hp. The automaker will also reportedly look to the Red Bull F1 Racing team, which it sponsors, for guidance when it comes to tuning whatever engine formula is decided on.
