McLaren's 911 Turbo Fighter to Make 450 HP

McLaren is now taking the fight to Porsche.

Currently set to be called the P13, McLaren’s latest model will serve as a so-called entry level model that will compete directly against the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo. Without question that rear-engined German sports car has set a very high benchmark, but McLaren feels it’s ready to step to the challenge. But unlike the MP4-12C, which battles the Ferrari 458, the P13 will be sold in greater volumes and will still have plenty of the UK automaker’s signature technologies.

Rumor has it that it’ll be powered by the same turbocharged 3.8-liter that’s in the 12C and P1, but output will be lowered to around 458 horsepower. The 911 Turbo, if anyone recalls, produces 520 hp, but the new McLaren will weigh less than 3,200 lbs – roughly 300-400 lbs. less than the Porsche.

In other words, what it lacks in output will be made up for with a reduced weight in order to achieve maximum performance. Pricing will also be in 911 Turbo territory, which is about $150,000. Styling wise, expect for the P13 to look like a scaled-down version of the P1.

Apparently even McLaren now thinks the 12C’s styling is too bland.
