Next generation of top-of-the-line Alfa Romeos could pack engines developed by the prestigious Prancing Horse marque.

When you've got an outfit as technologically advanced as Ferrari at your disposal, you don't let it keep its talents all to itself. That's why Ferrari developed the V8 used in all current Maseratis. But according to the latest reports, that could expand right into the upper reaches of the Alfa Romeo range. It wouldn't be the first time Ferrari had been called in to provide Alfa some mechanical motivation. The 8C Competizione was powered by a Ferrari-built 4.5-liter V8.

Even a couple of Lancias (like the Stratos and the Thema 8.32) featured Ferrari engines. The next generation of Alfa Romeo and Maserati models, however, could take that to the next level. The Prancing Horse marque is tipped to be developing a range of new V6 and V8 engines, with and without turbochargers, for upcoming Alfa Romeos and Maseratis. That comes as little surprise vis-a-vis the Trident brand's upcoming models, like the new Quattroporte, Levante SUV and Ghibli sedan. But given that Alfa Romeos are currently available with engines no larger than four cylinders, the prospect of Ferrari-developed engines in new Alfas comes as particularly intriguing news.

While the MiTo, Giulietta and upcoming 4C will likely continue with their four-cylinder engines developed by Fiat Powertrain Technology, the Giulia sedan that's slated to replace the 159 could benefit from a larger Ferrari-tuned motor. The upcoming roadster being developed with Mazda would likely be restricted to four cylinders, though.Just what else Ferrari may lay its hands on remains to be seen, but with Alfa still set to make its return to the North American market, count our interests officially piqued. Sources anticipate further details to be announced within the coming two months
