Mercedes targets Porsche 911 with all-new AMG GT sports cars

Just when things threatened to get a little dull at Mercedes-Benz, along comes a cool new sports car.

The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT represents a new direction for the famous German brand's performance division as it says it is moving ahead into a new sports car segment. It appears from the new name that AMG got to play a larger role in the development. And the GT has a tough act to follow, the gullwing-door Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

If you want one, you'll pay top dollar. Prices are expected to start at about $120,000.

While Mercedes underscores the car's performance prowess, it says the two-seater is meant to be an everyday driver. Or as the brand puts it, "a comfortable and reliable companion for everyday motoring thanks to its practical decklid, easily accessible luggage compartment, and high level of comfort on long journeys."

The car has a long hood and wide rear end in what Mercedes says is an attempt to underscore its rear-wheel-drive heritage. The car will be largely made of aluminum.

"The new Mercedes-AMG GT is a sports car in its purist form", says Gorden Wagener, vice president of design for Mercedes' parent Daimler. "Breathtaking proportions, powerfully sculpted surfaces and flowing lines turn the new AMG into a contemporary sports car which embodies the spirit of the glorious Mercedes sports cars."

Only the second sports car developed in-house by Mercedes, the GT is a front mid-engine design centered around its biturbo 4-liter V-8 engine. The motor produces 456 horsepower. If that isn't enough, there's a GT S version putting out 503 horsepower.

Mercedes says it thinks its powerplant will be good for zero to 60 mph acceleration times of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 193 mph.
