VW Sweden Builds the Snowareg

What do you do when the snow's too deep even for a Touareg? You put tank tracks on it, of course.

If you live in a snowy climate, you've got justification to buy a four-wheel-drive SUV. And the Volkswagen Touareg would certainly be a fine choice.

But when you're dealing with seriously deep snow drifts, even a bona fide off-roader isn't going to do it. Not with wheels, anyway.

That's why Volkswagen Sweden built what it calls the Snowareg. VW's Scandinavian subsidiary replaced the Touareg's wheels with tank tracks at each corner, powered by the stock 4.2-liter V8 TDI with 340 horsepower and a snow-plowing 590 lb-ft of torque.
