Some companies found out problems with their vehicles after launching them. They were obliged to pull them out of the dealerships and tell their customers to return the cars.

Ford Pinto recall in 1978
1.5 million Ford Pintos and Mercury Bobcats recalled because of rear-impact collisions caused fuel spillage and potential fires.
Estimated cost was $20 million.

2009-2010 Toyota gas pedal recall
More than 7 million cars were recalled for the unintended acceleration. The pedal was sticky and it got trapped by the floor-mat.
Toyota suffered big losses between fixes, lost sales and settlements of approximately $5 billion. 5 deaths were connected to the pedal entrapment.

Chrysler Jeep recall 2013
1.56 million Jeeps were recalled and 1.1 million were called back for inspection
NHTSA argued there were at least 65 accidents that caused fires and resulted in the death of 51 persons.
Chrysler maintains that the vehicle is not defective.

GM ignition switch recall 2014
This could cause the car to loose power if ignition switch was bumped
2.6 million cars were recallled and at least 13 deaths resulted from the ignition switch.
