Next Panamera and Continental to Share Platforms

The next-gen Porsche Panamera will continue to be an outright high-performance sedan with RWD. The current Porsche Panamera is due for a complete redesign in 2016 and since the brand has now been fully integrated into the VW Group, the car will apparently share its platform with the next-gen Bentley Continental.

The next-gen Porsche Panamera will continue to be an outright high-performance sedan with RWD. The current Porsche Panamera is due for a complete redesign in 2016 and since the brand has now been fully integrated into the VW Group, the car will apparently share its platform with the next-gen Bentley Continental. Both cars will be built on VW’s new front-engine, rear-wheel-drive MSB platform. Previous rumors were going around claiming the next Panamera will be based on the same platform as the Audi A8 as VW was hoping to keep costs down.

However, the latter is quite a different car considering it has standard all-wheel drive, not to mention a somewhat different audience. The Panamera/Continental, on the other hand, is geared more towards outright performance and the need for rear-drive is an absolute. As such, the MSB platform allows for the drivetrain to be mounted close to the front bulkhead, a requirement for well-balanced high-speed handling. The cars’ architecture will be built using a combination of high-strength steel and aluminum in an effort to reduce weight, improve safety and increase performance. The 2016 Panamera will also continue to offer a range of engines that will include the familiar V6, V8, hybrid and diesel options. Most importantly, the overall look and feel of the Panamera and Continental won’t change much from the current models.
