Get over those boring, slow straight line driving, highway cruising self driving cars. BMW awed everyone present during its Consumer Electronic Show (CES) demonstration with the world's first self drifting car.

You read that right. The Bavarian automaker showcased two prototype cars, the first was the yet to be launched M235i coupe and the other, a 6-Series Gran Coupe, equipped with electronics, under the ConnectedDrive banner.

BMW then took the M235i coupé out on to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway where the car performed all sorts of crazy antics a driver would normally do when in a race track. Only in this case the car was driving itself.

The prototype models, equipped with state of the art electronics, including military spec GPS systems, LIDAR system, ultrasonic radar, 360 degree stereo camera technology and more, can pull-off high speed maneuvers autonomous drive vehicles are not generally capable of performing.

These BMW cars are smart enough to overtake at high speeds through lane changing and reentering the correct lane, calculate and take the quickest line on a racetrack, corner at high speeds precisely and even drifting. All this without any input from the driver.
