Forget About It: Cadillac Nixes RWD Big Sedan

Although initial design work was underway, Cadillac has reportedly scrapped plans for a large RWD sedan. Ever since Cadillac unveiled its open-top Ciel Concept at the 2011 Concours d’Elegance, there’s been speculation that the luxury brand was looking to build a rear-wheel-drive large sedan that would compete with the likes of the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class

Ever since Cadillac unveiled its open-top Ciel Concept at the 2011 Concours d’Elegance, there’s been speculation that the luxury brand was looking to build a rear-wheel-drive large sedan that would compete with the likes of the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class. But guess what? It ain’t gonna happen. A new report is now out claiming that after punching all the numbers, GM execs realized that in order to make a profit, the car would have to be priced higher than $100,000.

Despite the high cost involved, a Cadillac like this would have been one hell of a car, as it would have likely been built on the brand’s RWD Omega platform. A 2016 or 2017 launch date was being targeted and initial design work was reportedly under way. It was back in 2003 that Cadillac first began speculation that it wanted to build a large sedan with the premiere of its Sixteen Concept at the 2003 Detroit show. But still, such a production car would have been a niche model and the investment was simply too much. Fortunately, Cadillac still hasn’t ruled out additional niche models in the future but has remained mum as to what they could turn out to be.
