How and When to Take Care of Your Car Tires in Summer

Summer heat can be tough on your car especially your tires. High temperatures, long drives, and hot road surfaces can lead to faster wear and even dangerous blowouts if you’re not careful. Taking the right steps to care for your tires during summer will keep you safe and help your tires last longer. Here's how and when to do it

1. Check Tire Pressure Regularly

Heat causes air to expand, and your tire pressure can rise quickly during summer. Overinflated tires can lead to reduced traction and uneven wear. On the other hand, underinflated tires can overheat and cause blowouts.

When?
Check your tire pressure at least once every two weeks and before any long road trip. Always check pressure when the tires are cool, either early in the morning or after the car has been parked for a few hours.

Tip: Use a digital tire gauge and compare with the recommended PSI (found in your vehicle’s manual or on the driver’s door sticker).

2. Inspect Tread Depth

Tire tread helps grip the road—especially important during sudden stops or on hot, slippery roads. Worn tread is dangerous and reduces your ability to brake effectively.

When?
Check your tread depth every month. An easy way is using the penny test: Insert a penny into the tread with Lincoln’s head upside down. If you can see all of his head, it’s time to replace your tires.

3. Rotate Tires

Rotating your tires helps them wear evenly, which extends their lifespan and improves performance.

When?
Every 8,000 to 10,000 km (or every 6 months). Summer is the perfect time to do it, especially if you're planning a road trip.

4. Check for Cracks and Bulges

Summer heat can cause the rubber in tires to degrade faster. Look out for cracks, bulges, or cuts on the tire surface or sidewalls.

When?
Inspect your tires visually once a month or before long drives. If you spot any signs of damage, get them checked by a professional immediately.

5. Avoid Overloading Your Car

Heavy loads put extra stress on tires—especially in hot weather—and can lead to overheating or tire failure.

When?
Before packing your car for summer vacations or road trips, check your vehicle’s load capacity. Don’t overload, and distribute the weight evenly.

6. Store Tires Properly (If Using Seasonal Tires)

If you change tires seasonally, proper storage is key. Summer heat and sunlight can damage off-season tires if not stored correctly.

How?
Store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, preferably in tire bags or covers to protect the rubber.

Taking care of your tires during summer isn’t complicated—it just takes a little regular attention. With the right care, you can drive safely, save money on fuel, and extend the life of your tires.

Drive smart this summer—start with your tires.
